About the committee / Forum

SPIC MACAY, the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture among Youth is a non-profit, voluntary, apolitical and participatory movement of young people. It is dedicated to enriching education through the spread and appreciation of India's classical heritage and the aesthetics of the Indian classical milieu, especially those of the performing arts.

The SPIC MACAY had a glorious start at IIM Mumbai, in 2002, with a Mohan Veena concert by Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Since then there has been no looking back. SPIC MACAY IIM Mumbai is one of the most active members of the Mumbai SPICMACAY chapter and gets the choice of concerts in both Viraasat, and Fest the annual series of concerts held by SPICMACAY, Mumbai.

Padma Talwalkar (Vocal), Nayan Ghosh (Sitar), Sultan Khan (Sarangi), Raja Kale (Vocal), Sonal Mansingh (Odissi), Ustad Abdul Haleem Jaffer Khan, Pt. Buddhadev Das Gupta (Sarod), Shri Aditya Kalyanpur (Tabla) and Shri Rupak Kulkarni (Flute) are some virtuosos whom SPIC MACAY IIM Mumbai has been fortunate enough to host.

In addition to concerts, SPICMACAY, IIM Mumbai also organizes a number of cultural events like painting competitions, poetry recitals, quizzes and movie shows aimed at heightening awareness of Indian culture among the members of the IIM Mumbai community.

  • (Saraswati Veena by Jayanthi Kumaresh,Koodiyattam by Smt.Kapila Venu,Screening of movie,”The making of the Mahatma”&”A separation”)
  • Norwegian Opera
  • Classical Dance by Padma Vibhushan Dr. Sonal Mansingh Ji :22nd October’13
  • Bharatnatyam recital by Padmashree Malavika Sarukkai : 21st Jan’14
  • Rajasthani folk performance by Bhutte Khan Manganiar group : 24th Jan’14
  • Sarod Performance by Pt.Pradeep Barot : 10th July’14
  • (SPIC MACAY events are subject to availability of artist so their time can’t be always decided in advance)
  • Mini Virasat: a week long cultural festival comprising of all aspects of Indian cultural heritage. Mini Virasat is an eclectic mix of some of the best aspects of virasat-cinema,classical dance and classical music in a four day cultural extravaganza.(September 2nd week: 5th Nov to 12th Nov)
  • This year Mini Virasat ‘14 started by Classical music performance by Pt.Ajay Pohankar Ji followed by performance by Bharatnatyam exponent Dr.Smt.Sucheta Bhide Chapekar on second day.On third day Flute Performance by Ronu Majumdar wasorganized and on 4th day Charlie Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator” movie was screened.At last a 3day art workshop on Cheriyal Painting was organized which witnessed more than 50 registrations.

Roles & Responsibility

  • To inculcate the spirit of India's classical music and art among youth by organizing concerts, workshops and demonstrative lectures on India's classical music and art, all year round
  • To conserve and promote an awareness of this rich and heterogeneous cultural tapestry amongst the IIM Mumbai ians
  • Focus on the classical arts, with their attendant legends, rituals, mythology and philosophy and to facilitate an awareness of their deeper and subtler values.
